JLS Book Drive

The Juvenile Law Section Book Drive: The Mecklenburg County Courthouse Site

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Mecklenburg County Bar, the Bar and its designated sections dedicated April to be a month of service to benefit the community.  The Bar set a goal of 1,000 volunteer hours for the month of April and exceeded that goal by totaling over 1,600 hours.  As an effort to benefit Promising Pages, the Juvenile Law Section of the Bar committed to completing a one-month book drive in Mecklenburg County.  Book Drive boxes were placed at numerous locations throughout the county for members of the public to donate books for children.  The idea spurring this event was to give children books to read over the summer so progress is not lost from the education they learned this academic year.  Book Drive boxes were placed at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse, the Child & Family Services Center, the Guardian Ad Litem office, the Mecklenburg County Bar, and the Council for Children’s Rights.  Hundreds of books were donated during the month of April, demonstrated by Boxes needing to be emptied on weekly basis at certain locations.  Books were donated by members of the public conducting business at these buildings, employees working at these locations, and professionals who work with children on a daily basis.  One notable donation came from a local Girl Scout troop.  This troop held a father-daughter dance in April and for each family to participate in the event, each girl was required to donate a box of books to this Book Drive.  Seven girls came to the Child & Family Services Center on May 2nd to bring the donated books.  This Book Drive proved to be one of the most successful events for the Mecklenburg County Bar and they are incredibly excited about their contribution to Promising Pages.
